Technological University of Malaysia or Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) as it is locally known is the oldest university in Malaysia that specializes in the field of technology and engineering. Also known by its abbreviation UTM, the school is Malaysia’s premier source of engineering professionals as well as professionals from other similar fields. It is the 2nd best university in Malaysia in 2007 next to University of Malaya and is part of the top ten universities in South East Asia.
Technological University of Malaysia – History of UTM
UTM was inaugurated in 1904 and began as a technical school. It was only in 1960 that degree courses in engineering were offered. Then in 1967, it was upgraded to university status with technological institution level. It was in 1975 that the institution was named as what it is known now.

Aside from the undergraduate degrees that it offers, UTM also has postgraduate programs available. It offers a total of 160 Technology and Engineering programs. Among the faculties that offer these programs are: Faculty of Computer Science & Information System, Faculty of Biosciences & Bioengineering, Faculty of Civil and Electrical Engineering, and Faculty of Biomedical Engineering. The university also has separate faculties for Human Resources Development, Pure Sciences, Education and Management.

As it is required for undergraduate students to be in the residential colleges, Technological University of Malaysia can accommodate up to 20,000 students and even has 200 apartments available for students that have families.
The university has a Centre for Information and Communication Technology which wires 2000 inter-connected computers throughout the campus as well as in the libraries and the residential colleges. The center is considered as the biggest computer hall in Malaysia.
