Sultan Idris University of Education (UPSI)

Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) or Sultan Idris University of Education is one of the oldest higher learning institutions in Malaysia. UPSI’s main campus is found in Tanjung Malim and a new one is being built in Proton City, which is just 5km far from the first one.

Sultan Idris University of Education – History

The school was established in 1922 first as a training institution for Malay teachers. It was first known as Sultan Idris Training College (SITC) and was named after the 28th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah. Initially, training was only for three years but after the Razak Report or 1956 Education Committee Report was passed, the training period was extended to 5 years with additional curriculum introduced.

In 1987, the school was upgraded and renamed as Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris (IPSI) or Sultan Idris Teachers Institute. Then in May 1997, because of the country’s plan to boost the production of teachers in both the primary and secondary levels, the school was upgraded to a university status and was named to what it is known today.

Sultan Idris University of Education – Courses offered

UPSI has 8 faculties in both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs. These are: Faculty of Arts and Music, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, Faculty of Information and Communications Technology, Faculty of Languages, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and Faculty of Sports Science.

Sultan Idris University of Education – Facilities available

In-house resident halls are available to accommodate 600 students. In the new campus, 10 resident halls are being built, each able to accommodate 300 students. Students that will need to go from one campus to the next will be able to use the shuttle bus that is provided by the school. For students who wish to stay in accommodations outside the campus though this is highly probable and the school even provide assistance.

A music and arts complex is also available for students and the school’s library is equipped with a vast collection deeming it comparable to any modern library around the world.
