Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) or MARA University of Technology is a public university in Malaysia that operates through its motto Usaha Taqwa Mulia or Effort, Devotion, Nobility. It is considered as the biggest university in Malaysia, with 40,000 students in the main campus and 80,000 spread all over the country.
MARA University of Technology – History
The school was established in 1956, and since then it has grown rapidly. It started as Dewan Latehan RIDA Training Center, with RIDA meaning Rural and Industrial Development Authority. In 1965, it was no longer operating under RIDA and instead was under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) or Council of Trust for the Indigenous People. It then became the most important of all the units of the training divisions under MARA.
In response to Malaysia’s need for trained professionals, the school was upgraded and was renamed as Institut Teknologi MARA in 1967. It was in 1999 that the school changed its name to what it is known today.
MARA University of Technology – Courses offered
The school has 24 faculties that are open to international students and Bumiputras only. Non-bumiputras are only accepted in their preparatory programs that are held in INTEC. The school also has 200 academic programs and 5 learning centers. Its faculty reaches 4,000 comprising of academes, researchers and scholars.
The faculties are divided into two clusters. These are the Science & Technology cluster which includes Science, Medical Science and Engineering faculties; the Social Science & Humanities cluster that includes Social Science and Humanities faculties; and the Business & Management cluster.
The schools learning centers are: Academy of Language Studies (APB), International Education Centre (INTEC), Institute of Education Development (InED), Institute of Education Development (InED), Institute of Graduate Studies (IPSis) and Centre for Islamic Thoughts & Understanding (CITU).
